In 2024 the Benhall & Sternfield History Group’s project was to look at the changes in Farms and Farming in our two villages.
First the 1921 census was researched to create a working list, then the MAF 1941 surveys at the National Archives in Kew were copied for every farm in Benhall and Sternfield. Next these details were then compared with the 1939 Register and finally several farms in the area were singled out for detailed research. Additionally current and retired farmers were interviewed and recorded. The changes in land use and the loss of many farms was discernible over the last 100 years..
A book was created summarising many of the farms & farmers. A printed version is available for loan or purchase, please contact us by email: benhallsternfieldhistory@gmail.com.
