Pal, the canine Casanova, dies as he would have wished – visiting a paramour late at night
Performer of a dozen tricks, hero of a hundred fights and possibly father of ten times that number of progeny – Pal will make people laugh no more. And no more will Pal the tough cross-bred fox-terrier-labrador Casanova battle for his ladies’ favours.
It is 15 years since Pal first made his impact on the village. His owner, Mr. Ted. Ayden, Blyth councillor and champion of the village’s lost causes, took him as a pup to save him being put down by a vet.
Since then this stocky white dog, with a huge patch over his left eye, had become one of Benhall’s characters.
A typical one-man dog, he was trained by Mr. Ayden to carry out a complete repertoire of tricks which included sitting still with spectacles and puffing away at a cigarette, catching a biscuit in his front paws while sitting on his hind legs, and “dying” for minutes on end.
He was a regular performer at children’s parties in nearby Snape at one time, and he would regularly collect a pound or so for church funds from visitors to Sternfield Church fete.

But it was Pal’s love-life which captured the imagination of all the villagers. Whenever one of his lady friends in the area was in the mood for romance, Pal would be there.
Mr. Ayden said that he brought Pal indoors, evidently very ill. He wrapped him up and put him in his basket. But during the night Pal got out and made his way to Kiln Lane where an old love lives. He was found there on Monday morning – dead.
“I shall never have another dog,” said Mr. Ayden. “There could never be another like him.”
